![]() ![]() A possible efficacy of opiate antagonist treatment for pathological gambling has been replicated in a number of placebo-controlled studies. In the absence of comorbid psychiatric disorder, these studies did not conclude to the efficacy of these psychotropic drugs. Important studies were carried-out on antidepressants, mood stabilizers, and antipsychotic agents. This paper describes the development of pharmacological treatments for pathological gambling and is based on a review of the literature published in the past 10 years. There are, however, no approved pharmacological treatments for pathological gambling. Title: Psychopharmacological Treatment in Pathological Gambling: A Critical ReviewĪuthor(s): Sophia Achab and Yasser KhazaalĪbstract: Given the rates of pathological gambling and its impact on affected individuals and their relatives, effective treatments are needed. Keywords: Pathological gambling, drugs, antidepressant, lithium, valproate, carbamazepine, naltrexone, nalmefene, topiramate, glutamate, N-acetylcysteine, gambling, antiepileptic, nefazodone, fluvoxamine, paroxetine, sertraline, cyclothymia, olanzapine Preliminary results on N-acetyl cysteine, Memantine and Topiramate produced significant improvement for pathological gamblers and may open new avenues for treatment. Based on these issues we also discuss how research in humans and animals may be brought in line to maximize translational research opportunities.Given the rates of pathological gambling and its impact on affected individuals and their relatives, effective treatments are needed. ![]() Here, we review in humans and animals three features of pathological gambling which hitherto have received relatively little attention: (1) sex differences in (the development of) pathological gambling, (2) adolescence as a (putative) sensitive period for (developing) pathological gambling and (3) avenues for improving ecological validity of research tools. Both human and animal studies rapidly advance our knowledge on brain-behaviour processes relevant for understanding normal and pathological gambling behaviour. It therefore represents a growing concern for society. ![]() The prevalence of pathological gambling will likely increase in the coming years due to expanding possibilities of on-line gambling through the Internet and increasing liberal attitudes towards gambling. ![]() As a case in point, pathological gamblers continue gambling despite the fact that this disrupts their personal, professional or financial life. (2013), a b s t r a c t Decision-making plays a pivotal role in daily life as impairments in processes underlying decision-making often lead to an inability to make profitable long-term decisions.
